How to Clean Using Clay Bars
November 3rd, 2008
Clay bars such as Pinnacle’s Ultra Poly Detailing Clay Bar can enhance the finish of your vehicle when used after washing and just before waxing. The purpose of a clay bar is to remove contaminants commonly left behind even after normal washing. Most people are surprised to learn that their vehicle may still have brake dust, dirt, sap, etc. left on the exterior after washing. This is because you cannot see most of these contaminants, but when removed you will notice a better result when waxing. You can also use clay bars to remove stubborn bugs and debris on chrome and glass.

So, how do you know if you should use a clay bar on your vehicle?
It’s very easy. Simply place your hand inside of a sandwich bag or other thin plastic bag and run your fingers along the paint. If you feel a roughness or what feels like small pebbles of sand, then you should clean your car with a clay bar. Your paint should have a smooth finish to it similar to clean glass. Before you use the clay bar be sure to wash your vehicle first.

How to effectively use the clay bar -
- Spray a small area using a clay lubricant. Wolfgang’s Clay Lubricant is popular among car detailers and does a pretty good job. Using a clay lubricant is important to avoid scratching your vehicle. You should also avoid using soap and water as a clay lubricant because it will deteriorate the clay.
- Rub the clay bar back and forth in the area where you have applied the lubricant. Be sure to rub gently and do not press down too hard. You should feel resistance from the clay not wanting to glide across your vehicle. This is normal and simply means that the clay is picking up the debris and contaminants. Rub the area with the clay until it feels smooth and remember to keep the clay well lubricated.
- Once the area feels smooth using the clay, wipe the area clean with a microfiber towel. If you see any clay residue left on the vehicle simply spray some lubricant on the affected area and wipe it off with the microfiber towel.
- Repeat this process until you have decontaminated your vehicle. Be sure to protect your finish by applying your favorite wax, especially after claying.
